What is the droit de suite fee?

Droit de suite is an additional fee added to the amount due for the auctioned lot in the case of a professional resale of the artwork: when it has been acquired second-hand, rather than directly from the artist.

It arises from the untransferable economic copyright and is paid by the organizer to the artist or their heirs. The droit de suite fee is applied to transactions above 100 EUR and ranges from 0.25% to5% of the sale price of the artwork, depending on its final price. If a particular lot is subject to this fee, this information can be found in its description on the lot’s page. In the email summary sent after the auction ends, it is included under the Additional fees section.
