Work description:
Viktor Zin's artistry is not only an extremely skilled hand and sense of observation, but also the power of imagination.
The artist's painted and drawn compositions are repeatedly variations on the theme of buildings and landscapes that exist in reality, of which this watercolor presented at the Krakow Auction House auction is an excellent example.
The painting recognizably depicts the wooden church of St. James the Apostle and St. Catherine of Alexandria in Raciechowice, which was built in the 18th century and was later rebuilt. Comparing the mass and architectural detail of the Raciechowice temple with Wiktor Zin's painting, one can quickly find several differences, such as the appearance of the outer chapel at the church's chancel, the appearance of the door (in Wiktor Zin's case a portal) leading to the sacristy or the forms of the arcades at the building's nave. The artist also placed the temple not in the center of a built-up village, but in an imaginary landscape - on an empty hill, with a majestic view of the mountains shown in aerial perspective. The result was an interesting painting based on an authentic historic building, but bearing a clear author's mark, as it was supplemented by the imagination and knowledge of the painter-architect.
