Work description:
Andrzej Partum was a Polish intermedia artist, performer, poet and painter. Among others, he was one of the most committed artists in the field of mail art (mail art).
He lived in Copenhagen since 1984. In this city he founded his own School of Positive Art Nihilism. Most of his paintings were created there. He usually executed them on wood, canvas, and various everyday objects. He used oil paints, but much more often resorted to individual techniques; he also painted his paintings and objects using car varnishes.
The featured painting belongs to Andrzej Partum's Copenhagen painting series and is a rarity, as the artist's works are extremely sporadic on the art market. The composition reflects Andrzej Partum's characteristic style, based on abstract organic forms. The artist consciously dispensed with the illusion of depth, emphasizing the flatness of the depicted elements, which makes his works resemble patchworks, macatas sewn together from different pieces of cloth. What distinguishes them from textiles, however, is their shiny surface, which from a distance appears smooth and uniform, but up close reveals a varied texture - in places completely flat, and in other areas clearly convex. The colored patches are separated from each other, devoid of sharp contours, freely overlapping each other, creating a coherent whole, while remaining isolated - each of them acts as an independent, strongly outlined element of the composition.
Andrzej Partum's painting work strongly corresponds with his poetic activity. The artist's paintings balance on the border between the visible world and abstraction, they do not reflect the emotions or experiences of the artist, but remain a kind of game of concepts.
