Artwork description:
The featured landscape by Wlastimil Hofman shows Szklarska Poreba - the place to which the painter moved in 1947 and settled in a wooden house under the forest on Spokojna Street, later renamed Matejki Street (the house is now called Wlastimilowka).
There the artist began a new stage of his life. While living in Szklarska Poreba, he continued to exhibit his works at numerous exhibitions, painted portraits of locals and tourists on commission and for profit, and also made decorations for sacred interiors. Daily contact with the Karkonosze nature became an inspiration for landscapes, usually in small, intimate formats.
The work on offer depicts Szklarska Poreba in the winter of 1947. It was the time of the Hofmans' plans to move to the Karkonosze and search for a home with the help of their friend Jan Sztaudynger. The forest landscape of the place, seen in the painting from above, is filled with vegetation with yellowed, still autumn leaves of trees and bushes and frosted, leafless birches. A wooden house with a sloping roof looms in the background. The warm colors of the vegetation and wooden buildings are broken by the lying snow. In the lower right corner you can see human staffage diversifying the composition. These are two figures of skiers taking advantage of the winter weather to indulge in a joyful ride.
