Artwork description:
In Wlastimil Hofman's paintings, a frequently recurring theme was the reverie over the passing of time. In the presented work, the artist used his characteristic composition, in which he showed a woman sitting on a rock in the foreground, while in the background he depicted a vast landscape with symbolic staffage. In the work "Paradise Lost" one can discern a vanitative pronunciation, indicated by a figure with a scythe, which is probably a personification of Thanatos. The melancholic mood is heightened by the author's very title, suggesting, in a way, the interpretation of the work, but also the figure of a thoughtful woman, as if unaware of the scene unfolding behind her back.
