The scene depicted was most likely taken from an engraving by Jan Styfi created according to a composition by Juliusz Kossak and reproduced in "Tygodnik Ilustrowanym" (1862, no. 168, p. 236), in the article "Podanie o czarnoksiężniku Twardowskim. With drawings by J. Kossak(ibidem, pp. 235-237).
The painting depicts a scene just after Mr. Twardowski's ride on a rooster, when: "Twardowski nodded as a sign of satisfaction, and the devil bowed low. [...]"
