Artwork description:
Bronisława Rychter-Janowska was particularly fond of the motif of the Polish noble manor in her work. She usually depicted it in an idyllic way, full of romantic mood.
The interiors painted by the artist were drowned in warm afternoon light, while the depictions of the manor houses blended harmoniously with the surrounding nature painted at different times of the day and year.
Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska's native architecture was captured in a variety of ways. Sometimes these were open compositions showing a fragment of a building's facade, at other times they were overall depictions of the architecture of manor houses, painted frontally or diagonally - as in the case of the presented work. The diagonal, asymmetrical approach allowed to give the painting the appropriate force of expression, and the artist's special sensitivity to color and light influenced the decorative aspects of the work.
In the case of the painting in question, noteworthy is the way in which the vast garden is depicted in a warm autumn atmosphere. The mood is conveyed by the low, softly falling light of late afternoon, which - seeping through the crowns of the trees - brings out the most important elements of the composition, i.e. the building of the mansion, as well as a table and a bench placed nearby, on which sits a woman dressed in black, immersed in reading a newspaper held in her hands.
The reverse of the work, decorated with an author's pencil sketch by Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska, which depicts a female figure with an accompanying dog, also deserves special attention from collectors. The woman is dressed in a sumptuous gown, holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand. This graceful motif is an interesting complement to the main representation.
